Spanish Prime Minister José Canalejas y Méndez resigned with his cabinet following a controversy over the King's pardon of rioters, though he resumed office the next day.

"I suppose Violet has wired to her father that she cant start till tomorrow so we shall be with you Thursday morning. I felt rather crushed and damped on arriving here after a dreary journey to find a letter saying she was ill.... The thought of Sicily and oranges is very delicious but horribly distant."
