A production of *Oedipus Rex* was presented in English for the first time at the Royal Opera House in London. Henry Labouchère, the politician known for the amendment making homosexuality a crime in the UK, died at age 80.

"Beloved - I left Mürren yesterday morning - feeling rather weak & wobbly... At Lucerne I found Venetia who poor darling had been there 24 hours - & was almost dead with boredom. We dined together - rested - releved - & started by the 11.52 night train to Milan.... I couldn't beat myself into a state of sufficiently hallowed anticipation of Rome - & yet I was disappointed when we drew into a station just like any other..."
