In the United States, vigilantes in San Diego brutally beat members of the Industrial Workers of the World after they were released from jail.

"I got your beloved letter yesterday & this morning a wire from Margot saying Father is much better – so I feel happier. Strength as unbending as his is very frightening – one feels it will never give until it is broken – I have felt this about Father for years – that if ever his health were to give way it wld. be quite suddenly & quite irrevocably.
