Russian explorer Georgy Brusilov began a disastrous expedition to find the Northern Sea Route; the ship would become trapped in ice.
"I wonder if you are in Venice; I suppose anything less like being in Venice than being here has seldom if ever been imagined. It has been raining very heavily... The Insurance Act is hated here with a surprisingly catholic hatred... The only thing which consoles the people here is that they none of them seem to think it has the smallest chance of passing."
