Whitelaw Reid, the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom, died suddenly in London.

"Dear Tante - At last I'm going to write you a real letter. Nothing but being in bed with what's called a 'bronchial chill' (my 3rd this winter) could possibly have cleared me space to - for I am living in a perfect obstacle race against time in view of my impending departure to America next Thursday! . . . I wonder if you have been very worried by all this silly Eye Witness agitation going on about the silver."
