Jack Thompson appeared at his own funeral in Hamilton, Ontario, after being wrongly identified as a victim of a shipwreck.

"My bankers informed me I was heavily in debt … I was not surprised. I shall be much more in debt when I have paid all the operations, nurses, homes, journeys to Riviera and Khartoum, hotel bills, and doctors all over the world! I wrote to my brothers for money: they refused to help me."
