H.H. Asquith
London
HIS DAYAsquith was in London presiding over a Cabinet meeting. The main topic was the Navy Estimates; Asquith reported to the King that strong protests were made by Lloyd George, Sir John Simon, and others against the proposed expenditure,.
Venetia Stanley
London
HER DAYProbably staying in London (in town), in her usual round of visiting/friends, and likely in touch with Asquith by letter/telephone about arranging to see him (he writes the next day, 1914-01-28, “I am hoping to see you again Friday”).. No specific fixed engagement for her is documentable for that exact day from the surviving chunks; best guess is a normal “in town” day rather than country-house travel.

"Cys has seemed much better the last 2 or 3 days & the weather has become much cooler which suits him.... We had rather an amusing experience yesterday when we went over (to Omdurman) with your brother & MacMichael... to tea with the Mufti... I have made great & real friends with a young Ulsterman (only by birth!) called Boyd... I feel slight compunction at staying so long with your brother"
