Letter #48Afternoon
"

We have had the exciting part of the debate, which ended in the exit of Carson... I had the best part of an hour with the Sovereign at Buck' Palace this morning. He is as you may imagine in rather a gloomy mood...

Asquith describes a dramatic debate concluding with Carson's exit for Belfast and rude behavior toward Winston Churchill. He details a morning audience with a gloomy King George V, who proposed an unworkable plebiscite scheme for Ireland. Asquith also mentions his voice is in poor condition and expresses affection for Venetia regarding their meeting the previous night.

Mentioned:Edward Carson • Winston Churchill • Violet Asquith • King George V
