My darling—after two days of complete starvation . . . I got at last . . . your most dear letter . . . We have had a nasty disaster to-day: the Formidable . . . has been torpedoed . . .
Asquith complains of letters crossing, plans a meeting, mentions the loss of the Formidable and Montagu's P.C.

The Royal Navy battleship HMS Formidable was sunk off Lyme Regis, Dorset, by a German U-boat, resulting in the loss of 547 crew.. The Ilford rail crash in Essex killed ten people and injured 500 passengers.. The Royal Flying Corps established No. 8 Squadron at Saint-Omer, France, and No. 10 Squadron at Farnborough Airport in Hampshire.. The railway station in Whitstable was closed as a wartime measure.

"Ld and Ly Beauchamp have lent us Walmer and I looked forward to going there enormously, but I must say the cold, discomfort, endless unpunctual railway journeys, noisy corridors and small rooms, have made me disappointed in the place. ... Two of my greatest friends were at Walmer on New Year’s Day—Edgar Vincent … and Edwin Montagu"
