The Easter Rising began in Dublin as Irish Republicans occupied the General Post Office and proclaimed an Irish Republic.. A German battle squadron bombarded Yarmouth and Lowestoft on the English coast, killing 22 servicemen and 3 civilians.. Ernest Shackleton and five companions launched the James Caird from Elephant Island to seek rescue.
