The Battle of the Somme began with the Battle of Albert; British forces captured Gommecourt, Montauban, and Mametz.. The British Army suffered its bloodiest day with 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 killed.. The 36th Ulster Division lost 5,500 men, and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment sustained a 90 percent casualty rate.. Nine Victoria Crosses were awarded for actions on the first day of the battle.
